Shawnee Senior Center
The Shawnee Senior Center and Shawnee Municipal Auditorium are
managed by the Senior Citizens of Shawnee, Inc. through a contract
with the City of Shawnee.

Activities are limited at this time as we work on the renovation to this
historic building but feel free to call and see what we have to offer for
your event.  We can accommodate: meetings, family reunions, parties,
dances, receptions, concerts and sporting activities.

primary services, however, people enjoy the socializing as much or more than the
meals.  Project H.E.A.R.T. site phone number in the Shawnee Senior Center is 275-

ADOPT-A-UNIT PROGRAM

Currently deployed in Iraq, is the pictured Oklahoma Army National Guard
Engineering Unit, the 245th Engineer Company (FWD), with several soldiers from the
Bethel Area.  This is only one of many units receiving supplies from the Shawnee
Senior Center.
In an effort to bring home a little closer for these soldiers, citizens of  City of
Shawnee and the Shawnee Senior Center are collaborating in what we hope is a
community wide effort to keep troop spirits high until they can come home for good.
Our first company, Delta Unit, with several soldiers from the Shawnee Area, has
completed their deployment in Afghanistan and have returned home.  For this, we are
truly grateful.
The Shawnee Senior Center at 401 N. Bell Street, will continue to be a designated
drop-off point for items to be collected, packaged and shipped to our new Unit in Iraq.
Once monthly, our "Fresh Start" Nutrition Class, sponsored by OSU Extension
Office, and with the support of Firelake Grocery, bakes cookies to be shipped to Iraq.
This group meets Mondays from 1:00 - 2:00pm
We also have a small group of volunteers making
"COOL COLLARS," material sewn
with water absorbing gel beads, worn around the neck, to stave off the raging desert
heat.  This group meets weekly on Tuesdays at 1:00PM, at the Shawnee Senior Center
and will continue to do so until they complete their goal of at least two collars per
soldier with an extra collar to share with others.
On October 26, 2007, the Shawnee Senior Center was awarded a beautiful
triangular folded flag encased in a glass and wood box along with a Presidential medal
and a certificate from the Army National Guard for our participation in the Adopt-A-
Unit program.  Senior Center participants and staff are all so proud of the work we are
doing such as donating, soliciting, packing then shipping items for the troops deployed
in Afghanistan and Iraq.
As with many things, the newness of the project seems to have worn off and it is
becoming difficult to bolster continued support for this vital program.  We have to
remember that, though not in our constant thought,
so many of these deployed
soldiers and their families are members of our own communities – and they need us
to remember them.

When you’re shopping, please remember…
