Downtown Project HEART Nutrition Site... in the Shawnee Senior Center

Project H.E.A.R.T. locates one of several Nutrition Sites in a four-county
area, at the Shawnee Senior Center at 401 N. Bell St., in Downtown Shawnee.  
Serving daily lunches at noon and delivering meals to homebound seniors are
the primary services, however, many people enjoy the social interaction as
much as the meals served.

Seniors must be at least 60 years of age to be eligible to participate in the
Project HEART program.  Persons under 60 years of age may eat at the
Nutrition Site however, meals cost is $5.25 per person and those underage
must wait to be served until all seniors have received meals.

Project HEART receives Federal funding to subsidize their meal program,
averaging approximately $7.00 each to prepare.  Though there is no charge,
a requested donation of $1.25 per meal is gratefully accepted to assist in
offsetting costs.  

To insure the proper amount of food is prepared, reservations for lunch are
requested by 8:30am each day.  Project H.E.A.R.T.'s phone number in the

The Downtown Nutrition Site team of five staff members, prepares meals for
approximately 90 people per day.  Approximately 60 meals per day are served
at the Shawnee Senior Center Nutrition Site and the remaining 30 meals are
delivered to seniors who are homebound and unable to travel to the Senior
Center.

Volunteers assist in serving meals on-site and drive meal routes to deliver the
homebound meals.  If you would like to participate as a Project HEART

The Shawnee Senior Center also provides transportation to the facility
through a contract with the Central Oklahoma Transit System (COTS).  This
contract is paid with funds generated through a percentage of a one-cent
sales tax voted on by the citizens of Pottawatomie County to support all senior
centers in the county.  With Federal funding quickly being slashed for senior
and many other programs, these sales tax proceeds provide meals and
services that would otherwise be unavailable to seniors.
